Team USA TIES PORTUGAL World Cup

DEMPSEY SCORES GOAL With STOMACH

CLINT DEMPSEY
SCORES GOAL Off HIS STOMACH
Off Great Pass From GRAHM ZUSI
To Give TEAM USA a 2 to 1 LEAD
Agains TEAM PORTUGAL
In WORLD CUP Action in BRAZIL

SOME 10 Minutes Later
Silvestre Varella would Score a Goal
From a superb pass from Porutgese Super Star
Christiano Ronaldo to Tie Team USA
with Only 16 Seconds to Play ..

The Goal was devastating to U.S. Fans
Who It Seemed They Had a Win in The Hand
But it Turned Out to Be, as they say,
"IN THE BUSH" and Not In Hand
As PORTUGAL TIED Team USA

A WIN Would HAVE Put The USA into The NEXT ROUND
of PLAY AUTOMATICALLY
NOW We Must EITHER WIN or TIE GERMANY on Thursday
to Advance, a Feat Easy Said Than Done Against a Tough Team like Germany.

As with Yesterdays Game Against Portugal, Thursdays Game Should Be Quite Exciting
and will Bring Out Millions of U.S. Fans watching at Home and at Bars all aorund
the Country and The WORLD.

As usual, as in the past 20 Years, I watched the game at Caffe Dante in
New York's Greenwich Village ...  Caffe Dante owned by Mr. Mario Flotta from Avellino
(Near Naples) Italy is a huge Futbol (Soccer) fan whose # 1 Team is The Azzurri (Team Blue) of ITALY .. I watched Italy lose to Costa Rica with Mario at Caffe Dante the other day .. Needless to say, Mario wasn't very happy at that one, and kept telling me, "I don't like this Game Danny." Of course not Mario, your team was losing ... My teams as some of you may know, are; # 1 Team USA, # 2 being ITALIAN-AMERICAN  I always root for Team Italia as long as they are not playiny USA .. And then I love Brazil as my # 3 team. Hey I've been down there a couple times on vacation and love the country, the people and of course the gorgeous women. Wow!

So as team USA Played Portuagal Sunday and Caffe Dante was packed to the gills, the air was filled with excitement. We were soon a bit deflated as Portugal scored a goal agains bad U.S. defense on this particular play. The rest of the first half was a bit uneventful with no more goals for the half. We had a few shots on goal, and Tim Howard didn't let another goal in in the half. I was drinking my Negroni and hanging with Mario and Raoul when Howard made one incrediable save that was quite exciting. There was a hard shot on goal that hit the post, a Portugese player got the rebound and took a shot on goal which Tim Howard miraculously deflected up and over the net. It was incrediable.
When the half ended, I ordered a LASAGAN, which Caffe Dante makes one of the best in the city, I love it. Just like my Aunt Helen and my ex-girlfriends Mom MRs. Lee used to make. "Real Tasty."

I told my friend Raoul, that's OK ( that we were down by 1 goal), the first half was their's, the second half will be ours. I was right! Sort of anyway. Jermaine Jones scored a sizzly goal to tie the game at 1 - 1 ... The game was tied and with just 10 minutes to play Grahm Zusi hit a gorgeous pass to Clint Dempsey who hit the Ball off his stomach and itno the Protugese net for a 2 to 1 U.S. lead .. Caffe Dante went Wild. It was pandimoneum with 100 excited U.S. Fans .. It seemed as though a Wine was in hand, but alass it was in the Bush, Varella hit a header into the US Net on a tremendous pass from Christiano Ronaldo and the win was gone, out of hand and into the bush. We had to settle for a Draw and hope for the best on Thursdays game against Germany. "Go Team USA" GO !!!!!

Italian Gravy Music

Frank Sinatra

MUSIC To MAKE SUNDAY SAUCE BY

Excerpted from SUNDAY SAUCE  -  When Italian-AMericans Cook

by DANIEL BELLINO ZWICKE

Music to cook Sunday Sauce by? It’s a great idea, and one that comes naturally. We’ve always done it. When cooking Sunday Sauce or any Italian dishes, it always helps to have some great Italian background music. It doesn’t hurt and only heightens an already wonderful experience, especially when you are entertaining guests.
There are two or three greats that always come to mind first. These prodigious Italian-American singers are of course, first; Frank Sinatra, then Dean “Dino” Martin (Crochetti), and Mr. Tony Bennett (Benedetto). They are the most famous, and for good reason, they are all just that, “Great.” When it comes to overall artist, it’s fare to say that Sinatra is usually at the top of the heap. But when it comes to actual Italian Songs, Dino, Jerry Vale, and Louie Prima have the great one beat for those particular types of songs. But hey, there’s no way anyone can beat “The Chairman of The Board,” Mr. Francis Albert Sinatra. Dino is wonderful with his famed renditions of Volare and Amore, and you can’t count out Jerry Vale with one of the most iconic and beloved to Italian Americans, especially in New York, with Jerry doing Al di La. Actually, many would say it is between Volare and Amore that are thee two most loved and popular Italian American songs. But no, for really true, hard core Italians, and as I’ve already said, especially in New York, it is Al Di La that we truly love most. It is played at every Italian Wedding, bar none. Many artists have sung it, but it is Jerry Vale’s that is most popular. Connie Francis’s rendition is quite beautiful and best of the female singers, Connie being an Italian Girl from Jersey, real name Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero. “Now That’s Italian.” Yes a lot of these great Italian-American artist changed their names back then, like Tony Bennett, real name Anthony Benedetto from Astoria Queens, New York. Dean Martin from Stubenville, Ohio, his real name was Dino Crochetti.
Back to Al Di La. If you’ve never heard the song, and I know there are many who haven’t especially among the younger generation, do yourself a favor, and get a copy of Connie Francis or Jerry Vale singing this gorgeous song. Get both!
The song That’s Amore is perhaps the most popular of all Italian-American songs for the general public. It is one of Dean Martin’s signature songs and with the popularity of the movie Moonstruck, starring Cher, Nicholas Cage, and Danny Aiello, this song became even more famous. Louie Prima had great success with this song, and his tune “Angelina” The Waitress at The Pizzeria is a must listen to song of Italian-America and eating.
So we have lots of great Italian Songs and Italian American and Italian artists, but one stands alone at the top. Yes, you know who? He’s A # 1, the one-and-only, Frank Sinatra.

The SS UNITED STATES

The SS UNITED STATES holds the Blue Riband for a passenger liner ship that crosses
The Atlantic Ocean in Record Speed. The SS United States broke the previous record held by Cunard Lines Queen Mary. The United States broke this record on July 3, 1952 on her Maiden Voyage of which my father (David Warren Zwicke) was a part of. The United States made the maiden voyage passing Ambrose Light at New York harbor to Bishop Rock off Cornwall, England in 3 Days 10 hours and 40 minutes at an average speed of 34.59 Knots or 40.96 Miles Per Hour. The SS United States still holds The Bule Riband and record to this day (June 21, 2014) and it likes like the record might never be broken and the Blue Rimand stays in the hands of this great AMerican ship which has been docked on the Delaware River on Pier 82 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 1986 ...

WEST BROADWAY For THE WORLD CUP

"They're For ARGENTINA HERE" !!!

There were many sad faces at Caffe Dante and all over Greenwich Village today as Italy led by Mario Balotelli aka "Super Mario" and Italian Teamates are unable to score even 1 goal in Team Itay's crushing defeat against Costa Rica  ... As with almost every Italian World Cup game in the past 20 years I watched the game at Caffe Dante on Mcdougald Street in New York's Greenwich Village, the longtime most famous Italian neighborhood in Manhattan.
Greenwich Village and Soho are hotbeds for watching World Cup action with many Eropeans and South Americans living in the area. Caffe Dante is the preferred local for watching Team Italy Games, while Novecento and Felix on West Braodway in Soho is thee # 1 hottest location to watch South American Futbol (Soccer) Games in New York .. Novecento owned by Argentinians who have a Novecento in Buenos Aires is # for games of team Argentina while the French Bistro across the street Felix is Groudn Zero for Team Brazil (Brasil) as the owners wife hails from Brazil .. It's quite alot of fun watching eithr Brazil or Argentina play at this spot on West Broadway near Broome Street in Soho, and I have long said it is one of the greatest locations in the World to watch World Cup Soccer matches .. It's quite exciting, and you will almost feel as if you were at the game live. If you can't be there, being on West Broadway at Felix or Novecento are the next best thing.
Yes, it was a let-down for Italian fans today. For me, Team Italy is my # 2 team after TEam USA, and I'll always root for Brazil as my team # 3 if Italy or USA are not playing, it's quite fun to have a few favorites (in a certain order) to root for.

10 Essentials of A Writers Life

CAFE DUEX MAGOTS

 PARIS

Erik Larson: Top 10 Essentials to a Writer’s Life

1. Good Coffee: Every writer has a ritual that begins the day. It’s like turning a key to start your car. For me, the key that starts the day is a good cup of coffee, preferably Peet’s Coffee.
2. More Coffee: Alas, I drink as many as five cups a day. And then switch to tea. My teeth are the color of plum-tree leaves.
3. Oreo Cookies: I mean, look, if you have a cup of good coffee, you need an Oreo. Some mornings—the tough ones—I define as two-Oreo days. Double Stuf preferred.
4. A Sense of Pace: Many writers make the mistake of engaging in what I call “binge writing.” They write for 10 hours straight, riding the perfect wave of inspiration. The problem is, you still need to wake up the next day and do it again. Best is to pace yourself. Write for three hours straight, without interruption, then stop.
5. Knowing Where to Stop: My favorite “trick” is to stop writing at a point where I know that I can pick up easily the next day. I’ll stop in mid-paragraph, often in mid-sentence. It makes getting out of bed so much easier, because I know that all I’ll have to do to be productive is complete the sentence. And by then I’ll be seated at my desk, coffee and Oreo cookie at hand, the morning’s inertia overcome. There’s an added advantage: The human brain hates incomplete sentences. All night my mind will have secretly worked on the passage and likely mapped out the remainder of the page, even the chapter, while simultaneously sending me on a dinner date with Cate Blanchett.
6. Blocks of Undisturbed Time: I set aside a minimum of three hours every morning, seven days a week, during which no one is allowed to intrude except to report an approaching cruise missile.
7. Physical Diversion: When I stop writing, I need an escape—something that takes me out of the work and wholly into another realm. My main diversion is tennis, though I also find cooking to be very helpful. Something about chopping onions is very restorative. Dogs are helpful, too. They force you to go outside and confront the weather, although my dog did once eat a 19th-century edition of a British physicist’s autobiography.
8. A Good Library: For all writers, but especially those of us who write  nonfiction, a good library with open stacks is crucial.

KETCHUP or CATSUP

KETCHUP or CATSUP ? What's Up" ???

Both words are derived from the Chinese ke-tsiap, a pickled Fish Sauce. It made its way to Malaysia where it became kechap and ketjap in Indonesia. Catsup and katchup are acceptable spellings used interchangeably with ketchup, however, ketchup is the way it is popularly used today. "Catsup", which dates to the same time, may well be a different Romanization of the same word, trying to come closer to a sound that doesn't really exist in English.
In the 1800s, "ketchup" was most common in Britain and "catsup" was most common in the US for reasons unknown. The two words never really canceled each other out because in their formative years, there weren't spelling dictionaries choosing a "correct" version of words. (Many Americans pronounced "catsup" the same as "ketchup" in any case.) Today, "ketchup" is the dominant term in both countries, though "catsup" still has its strongholds, especially in the southern US.
There was a sudden interest in the difference between catsup and ketchup after an episode of popular TV series Mad Men featured a (fictional) pitch to ketchup company Heinz.
According to a Heinz spokesperson, Henry John Heinz first brought his product to market as “Heinz Tomato Catsup,” but changed the spelling early on to distinguish it from competitors. Del Monte did not switch spellings until 1988, after it became clear that ketchup was the spelling of choice for American consumers. Hunt’s switched the name of their product from catsup to ketchup significantly earlier.
